Contextual Fit
The Smith House, built-in 1967, designed by Richard Meier, defines Meier's architectural design philosophy. Meier wanted to create a programmatic separation between public and private areas. The Smith Family has commissioned us to design an addition to their house on the shore of Long Island Sound. Although we are requested to respect the integrity of the original design by architect Richard Meier, our new addition will have its own presence. Our new addition must include a master suite, family room, and a formal outdoor area.
Narrative
My client is a writer and fishing enthusiast. Having recently just retired from writing, he is looking for a quiet place close to the shore to where he can see the sunrise and sunset every day with his wife and children. When he is not spending time with his family, his time is spent with his hiking, surfing, gardening, and of course fishing. As much as he enjoys the outdoors and his hobbies, home will always be home. Prepping meals and enjoying home activities are important to him and his family. The family room, master suite, gym, and a functional outdoor space are key for the family to engage in these activities.
